WITH THANKS & RECOGNITION TO OUR MACK ATTACK SUPPORTERS!

When the Springs Fire Department was founded in 1965 it acquired a 1941 Mack truck that was very similar to this 1946 model that we were fortunate enough to recently discover.  Our newest addition has an interesting past!

This Model E was built on Long Island for the military and after it was taken out of military service it found a home at the Miller Place Fire Dept. Here is stayed for a good number of years until it was sold to a man in Port Jefferson. When that man passed away his family was going to junk it. A longtime member of the Sayville Fire Dept saw the truck on Craig’s list and couldn’t let that happen. He acquired it and began a restoration effort that ultimately proved too much for one person.  The demands of time and the need for space ultimately took over. And so it came to pass that when the Springs Fire Department found the truck on Bonac Yard Sale it concluded that it was time to "Bring the Mack Back". 

The Department viewed the truck as a special tie to our history and also as an opportunity to connect with our community. It is important to every member of the Springs Fire Department that we spread good will and excitement around what it means to join the fire service. We believe giving others a glimpse of history can also translate into a contemporary drive for individuals to heed the call of service and protection and to act on interest to become a part of what is the legacy of the Springs Fire Department.

Our action plan began with getting the truck mechanically sound and 100% road worthy.  Then we moved into the auto body parts phase. Finally the truck was painted white in keeping with that 1941 Mack was had in service so many years ago.   

The restoration was also a terrific bridge of comradely between our senior and junior members - a number of which were eager to take this project on! Special events, educational opportunities, parade marches and musters are all in play with the Mack back to its full glory!
